2. Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

A more recent innovation, CVD grows diamonds by breaking down carbon-rich gases in low-pressure chambers using plasma or microwave energy. The freed carbon atoms deposit onto seed crystals, building the diamond layer by layer. CVD typically yields larger, purer crystals at lower costs, though most require post-growth treatments to enhance color and clarity.

The Asset Value Dilemma

Despite matching natural diamonds in quality and increasingly appearing in jewelry stores, lab-grown diamonds suffer significantly lower resale values. Several key factors explain this discrepancy:

Natural diamonds derive value from their geological rarity—finite resources formed under unique circumstances. Synthetic diamonds face no such limitations; production scales with demand. Major mining companies carefully regulate natural diamond supplies to maintain prices, while the lab-grown market lacks similar controls, leading to oversupply.

Technological advances have caused synthetic diamond prices to plummet. A one-carat, colorless VS-grade lab diamond that retailed for $3,600 in 2018 now sells for approximately $1,600—a 55% drop in five years. Industry reports indicate wholesale prices have fallen nearly 90% since 2015. 3. Underdeveloped Secondary Market

This perception, combined with natural diamonds' cultural legacy and brand prestige, reinforces their superior value retention.
